LATTC MACHINING TECH PROGRAM COMPETES IN F.I.R.S.T: Under guidance by instructors Steve Shibuya and Pete Rauterkus, LATTC’s Machining Technology program, partnering with King/Drew Medical Magnet High School, Raytheon Corp., NASA/JPL, and community partners competes at the F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Southern California Regional Competition at the Long Beach Sports Arena, March 15-17, 2012. This marks the 12th year that LATTC machining technology program has collaborated with team 606, and the 12th version of “Roybot” that we have built. This is a wonderful, family-friendly event that involves high school robotics teams in a collaborative game. The competition robot is named “RoyBot” after Dr. Roy, the high school’s first principal and the initial force behind implementation of the school’s robotic’s club.

ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENTS COLLABORATE: Under the leadership of LATTC instructors Marcela Oliva, Wally Hanley, and Willie Galvan, the architecture and construction technology departments, specifically plumbing, collaborated on a single project to create a unique class this winter intersession where the focus was sustainable landscaping. Since our climate is quite dry, how do we use technologies to get the most out of the water we have? Students in this class attacked that challenge. And what they developed is incredible. This project can be seen along Flower Street. To check out the program, please click this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgVwGl-W8gk

If you weren’t able to attend today’s ground breaking ceremony for the East Parking Structure, it was yet another milestone in our bond construction program that is changing the environment of our college. The East Parking Structure will be located at 23rd and Grand Avenue on the southeast corner. It is a design-build project being handled by Bernards. Many of the partners involved in our bond program were in attendance today and we were blessed by a group of students from Dr. McClain’s class.

The event would not have been possible without the Bernards folks, our CPM Rick Rye and his manager Michael O’Brien. Bill Smith and the Facilities team including Derek Taylor and Damian Nevarez, were critical, and thanks to Manuel Ortiz and Steve Anderson for providing sound. And of course, a very special thanks to my assistant Roxanne Romo who was with me early in the morning to help with preparations, information and photography for the event. Thank you to all of you that attended. Mark November 20th on your calendars….that’s when we will be officially dedicating Magnolia Hall.

Please take a look at what Manuel Morales put together highlighting today’s event.

The new district-wide student email system is here!

Your new LACCD email account will be your only connection to ALL campus and district communication including: Financial Aid award notifications, registration appointments, class change updates, ASO announcements, campus news and emergency plans.

The changeover is happening now and will be in full effect starting with the Spring 2013 semester.

What  does this mean to me as a student?

LACCD is phasing out the use of ANY student email address other than the Student.LACCD.edu account. The district is providing its students with “cloud” email accounts. That means all communication with the district and the college will use this new email account. Information will no longer go to your previous email address, ONLY the district-issued address. You can find your NEW email address by entering the SIS system.

Part of the LATTC Strategic Plan calls for effective communication in support of student success. The Public Relations department has studied that recommendation and responded with a plan to use inspiration and engagement to encourage persistence among Trade Tech students. The strategy includes the use of video stories to showcase various forms of student success. It is called LATTC Story Corps, and we have created the first chapter, a story centering on an older student who secured both his GED and his love of education here at Trade Tech. Luis Reyes hopes he can become an example to his children and to others here on campus. Eventually we will place LATTC Story Corps chapters in a special location on our website, so they can be easily accessed. For now, we will place them in the news posts.

Deputy Mayor and former UCLA Administrator

Larry Frank Selected as New President at

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College

The Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees today approved the new contract, which names City of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Laurence B. Frank as the new president of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Trade Tech serves 27,000 students each year with a primary focus on career-technical education. The LACCD Board of Trustees approved the selection at its regular meeting today May 1st, 2013, which took place at Los Angeles Mission College, following a rigorous search guided by LACCD Chancellor Dr. Daniel LaVista. Frank will assume his duties on July 1st, 2013. He will take over the college presidency following the retirement of current LATTC president Dr. Roland “Chip” Chapdelaine, who is retiring as president of the downtown Los Angeles community college after a seven-year tenure.

Larry Frank is currently the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio R. Villaraigosa. In that capacity, Frank is responsible for several city departments including community development, contract administration, and the City’s workforce development program. Frank has worked closely with the college in creating pathways of training for Los Angeles residents.

“It is a great honor to be asked to lead one of the finest educational institutions in Los Angeles. My years at UCLA and the City of Los Angeles have given me many opportunities to partner with L.A. Trade-Technical College and I appreciate the breadth of its contributions to our community. As downtown L.A. experiences a renaissance, Trade Tech is perfectly placed to build new training partnerships and educational opportunities that will lead our students to graduation, certifications, and careers. ”

Frank takes over Trade Tech, as it builds a leadership role throughout community colleges, specializing in career-technical education and competency-based learning models. The campus boasts more than 65 career-technical programs, many which are considered the premier programs within the state of California. Trade Tech’s rigorous focus on workforce development, has led to significant industry partnerships, grant opportunities and a re-vitalized relationship with the neighborhoods served by the college. That has been coupled with a re-engineering of student services, aimed at supporting student success throughout the campus population. Los Angeles Trade-Technical College has served the region for more than 88 years, and sits proudly on 24 acres just south of downtown Los Angeles.

Frank has been a faculty member at UCLA, working with the school’s Center for Labor Research and Education. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from St. Lawrence University with a B.A in Religious Studies. In 1990, he obtained his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law and developed a sentencing practice while specializing in juvenile law. He has worked for the United Farm Workers and other unions

It’s a Trade Tech tradition, and it has been re-energized by the LATTC Foundation. Tools for the Trades has made a huge comeback and you could tell just how excited students were at the annual Tools for the Trades rally this week. Hundreds of students came out to cheer for the winners from each of their career-technical disciplines. The momentum was evident and no one gets a crowd going like Carole Anderson. We need to thank the LATTC Foundation for resurrecting this program and making a real difference in supporting student success. Congratulations to the winners, we will post their names as soon as we receive the full list. The Tools distribution celebration will take place next week. Dear LATTC Family:

Once again Los Angeles Trade-Technical College is part of the city’s history. New Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price chose this campus to host his community swearing-in ceremony and hundreds turned out for the event this past Saturday. Councilman Price is calling his district the “new 9th” and his vision for progress includes Trade Tech as an educational hub for this community. He thanked the college for its years of service to the district and said he looked forward to partnering with us to provide even more opportunity. Both our acting president Leticia Barajas and our incoming president Larry Frank delivered welcoming remarks on behalf of the college. There is always one special connection with LATTC at these events…and this time it was the dress worn by Councilman Price’s wife Del. The dress was designed by a graduate of the Trade Tech fashion program. Beautiful!

There were resource tables as part of this event, and the attendees’ list was impressive. LA mayor Eric Garcetti, outgoing council member Jan Perry, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, among many others.

This event would not have been possible without some outstanding work and coordination by our Public Relations, President’s Office, Sheriff’s, Facilities, AV and IT teams. The councilman’s staff was very pleased with the event and I received many unsolicited comments about the grounds and facilities looking great. This event placed Trade Tech front and center with the community!
